Does it support eSIM? The device side and the network side
To answer "does it support eSIM", check both sides: on the device side, whether there is an eUICC (soldered or removable) and which GSMA standard it supports; on the network side, whether a local network or IoT provider offers profiles for that standard. Only with both — and with bands that match the local networks — does it really work.
The three GSMA eSIM standards
| Standard | For | How profiles are managed | Relies on SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGP.22 consumer eSIM | Phones, tablets, watches | The user acts on the device; a local profile assistant (LPA) downloads profiles | No |
| SGP.02 M2M eSIM | Early automotive and M2M devices | Pushed and managed by servers (often over SMS) | Usually |
| SGP.32 IoT eSIM | Headless, long-lived IoT devices | An eSIM IoT remote manager (eIM) switches profiles remotely and in bulk through an IoT profile assistant (IPA) | No — fits NB-IoT |
What the device needs
- An eUICC: soldered (MFF2, resists vibration and tampering) or a removable eUICC card.
- Phone eSIM (SGP.22): a local profile assistant (LPA) and a user interface on the device.
- IoT eSIM (SGP.32): an IPA — in the device or module firmware (IPAd) or inside the eUICC (IPAe) — plus an eIM platform.
How to read the network side
- Phone eSIM: every country page has an eSIM section listing the networks that offer phone eSIM and how it is activated, from Apple's official list, checked monthly.
- IoT eSIM: IoT connectivity providers supply SGP.32 or SGP.02 profiles; confirm countries, prices and the standard you chose with each one.
Four points that are easy to miss
- SGP.32 and SGP.02 do not interoperate: choose the standard at design time.
- eSIM does not fix bands: check bands first.
- Activation rules differ by country: in mainland China, for example, phone eSIM needs an in-store identity check and only some models can be activated.
- Put the eUICC model and its standard on the purchase list, so "eSIM" on a datasheet means your scheme will actually work.
Hyper Nexus products
Our dongles and modules use a physical SIM card and do not support eSIM yet. For projects that need eSIM, we are happy to evaluate a removable eUICC scheme with you.
Questions
Can a device without eSIM use eSIM?
The device needs an eUICC. A device with only a standard SIM slot can evaluate a removable eUICC card; with SGP.32 the IPA must sit in the device (IPAd) or in the card (IPAe). Test before launch.
Can SGP.02 devices move to SGP.32?
SGP.32 is not backward compatible with SGP.02 and there is no standardised migration path; mixed fleets usually keep old devices as they are and move new models to SGP.32. Choose the eSIM standard at design time.
What is the eSIM list on the country pages?
Apple's official list of carriers that offer eSIM on iPhone (phone eSIM, SGP.22), with carrier activation, quick transfer, QR code or app, and prepaid plans for travellers, checked monthly by our server. Confirm IoT eSIM with IoT providers.
With eSIM, do bands still matter?
Yes. eSIM only changes the profile, not the radio bands; if the bands do not match the local networks, an eSIM will not get the device online. Check bands on the country page first.
Do Hyper Nexus products support eSIM?
Hyper Nexus dongles and modules use a physical SIM card and do not support eSIM yet.
